The House Beyond the Kafana
by Michal Arnheim, Jerusalem, Israel
The artist began this project with a feeling—an unexpected sense of lightness and playfulness—that emerged when she found herself living in a house in the Serbian village of Gardinovci. As part of a photography residency, she shared the experience with other participants. However, the interior of her particular house sparked something personal: curiosity, tenderness, and an immediate desire to respond through photography.

The photographs, ranging from interior details to portraits and self-portraits, move through a space that is both literal and emotional. While the setting is specific, the focus extends beyond it toward the idea of inner space as something quietly transformative. Like a home, a friendship, or a shared language, these are places where one might feel accepted, inspired, and brave enough to act on their desires.

With a slightly kitsch aesthetic and an instinctive approach, the artist captures moments that are tender, bold, and subtly humorous. At its heart, the work speaks to spaces that are intimate, layered, and alive, reflecting who we are when we feel free to be ourselves.
