Flew the falcon, the grey bird
by Marina Tokareva, Belgrade, Serbia
In my project, I work with several layers of the medieval history of Serbia simultaneously — the biography of the witnesses and the epic of the Kosovo Cycle.
This project was inspired by the story of the first Serbian poet, Jelena Mrnjačević (Nun Efimija), who was present and a witness to the events of the Kosovo tragedy.

Through the recreation of metaphors from the Kosovo cycle, I, who am not a native Serb, try to better understand the culture of the country in which I now live. Serbian epic and poetry of that time is a direct experience expressed in art. I turn to them first and foremost, trying to find and interpret images that are "universal" and understandable at a glance.
The visual solutions of this series are based on a reference to the medieval technique of goldwork — embroidery with gold thread on red cloth, actively used in the art of the time. This work wouldn’t be possible without help and support of Jelena Milovanović and whole village.
